 Research objectives

The University of Sheffield wished to launch a new cross-departmental course (physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and also business studies and economics) relating to the use of solar technology in energy production, construction, agriculture, etc.

The research objectives were threefold:

  • To establish the feasibility of such a course in meeting the needs of industry and society;
  • To determine the content of the course and qualifications;
  • To advise on the naming and marketing of the course / qualification

The research was therefore designed to inform the launch and planning for the proposed discipline.

 Methodology

The research utilised depth guru interviews with a cross section of key experts and market representatives:.

The research objectives were threefold:

  • Government and regulatory (e.g. DECC, Defra, Ofgem)
  • Consumer and business bodies (e.g. Carbon Trust, Energy Saving Trust)
  • Industry and Trade organisations (e.g. Solar Trades Association, Renewable Heat Association)
  • Academic and media

The research was therefore designed to inform the launch and planning for the proposed discipline.

 Conclusions & Insights

The research provided widespread support and endorsement of Project Sunshine and provided detailed input to the planning and development of the course and associated qualifications.
